Argentina stars including Chelsea’s

Enzo Fernandez

have been caught singing about the Falkland Islands at the World Cup. The South American nation reached the quarter-finals with a stunning

3-2 comeback win against Egypt on Tuesday.

It leaves them just one win away from potentially taking on England in the semi-finals. The Three Lions first have to get past

Norway

on Saturday, while

Argentina

will take on

Switzerland

.

Despite that, it appears some players are already stoking the bitter rivalry. Footage from their celebrations after the

Egypt

win showed a number of players singing about getting revenge for the 1994 World Cup where

Diego Maradona

was banned after failing a drugs test.

There were also references to the Islas Malvinas, which is the Argentine word for the Falkland Islands. Of course, there has been tension between the two countries regarding the islands since a bitter conflict in 1982.

That has remained despite a 2013 referendum stating that 99.8 percent of residents wanted to stay under British rule. It was however suggested in April that US President

Donald Trump

could review their status but Prime Minister Sir

Keir Starmer

hit back.

He said: “We could not be clearer about the UK’s position on the Falkland Islands. It’s long standing. It’s unchanged.

“Sovereignty rests with the UK, and the Islands’ right to self determination is paramount. That’s been our consistent position and will remain the case.”

England and Argentina have had a few explosive clashes when it comes to football.

David Beckham

was infamously sent off against the South American side at the 1998 World Cup, the Three Lions eventually being eliminated on penalties despite Michael Owen’s wonder goal.

They then met again four years later, with Beckham earning redemption by scoring a penalty to beat Argentina in the group stage. The two sides have not faced off since a memorable 2005 friendly where England won 3-2.

Speaking after his side’s win against Egypt, Argentina icon

Lionel Messi

said: "I've said it many times and I'll say it again. This is a group that competes, always giving their best, a group that never gives up, they never let their arms down.

“That's why we achieved all that we achieved. Today, it was a demonstration of character, of pride, of love, of trying. I'm very happy and proud of this group. It shows every day that they never stop trying."
