Last month, former
Manchester United
star
Mark Hughes
suffered the worst news a parent can hear: the death of his son Alex.
had two spells at Old Trafford, with his first between 1983 and 1986.
The Welshman
moved to FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich before making a swift return in 1988.
Hughes would spend seven seasons at the club during his second spell, scoring 116 goals.
He would also have spells as a player at teams like Chelsea, Southampton and Blackburn Rovers.
His son, who died at 38 years old, had playing spells at Stockport County and Wrexham.
He moved into player analysis and recruitment roles, working for clubs such as Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City and Fulham before leading a private academy in Portugal.
After his death, his father released a
statement
via the League Managers’ Association stating, “Alex was a wonderful son, brother to Curtis and Xenna, devoted husband and father to Jessica and their two beautiful children Sebastian and Leonardo.”
The funeral was held yesterday at St Peter’s Church in Prestbury, and numerous people connected with
were in attendance to support the Hughes family.
The
Manchester Evening News
reports, “Sir Alex Ferguson, Mike Phelan, Martin Edwards, Bryan Robson and Ryan Giggs were among those in attendance, while Grimsby Town boss David Artell led a delegation from the Mariners, where Alex was working as player recruitment lead before he died suddenly and unexpectedly on June 19th.”
Other people connected with football in attendance included Martin Keown and Jon Walters.
Former
striker
“carried the coffin of his son into church along with other family members, including Alex’s brother Curtis and his father-in-law, David Pollock, who delivered an emotional eulogy.”
