Manchester United
have broken their silence, sending a clear message to fans after suffering a double transfer blow in recent weeks.
The summer window may only be a fortnight old, but United have already made sure they’re the main characters in what’s shaping up to be a wild ride.
United are prioritising midfield reinforcements as they prepare to play in the Champions League and potentially mount a Premier League title challenge next season.
The Red Devils moved with speed to wrap up a deal with Atalanta for
Ederson
, who is set to officially complete his move after Brazil’s involvement in the World Cup. Ederson’s move may have been fast-tracked, but progress on other fronts has been far less straightforward.
Last week, it was confirmed that United had missed out on Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson. The England international is poised to join cross-town rivals Manchester City for a mega £116m fee. After losing the race for Anderson, United turned their attention to another priority target – Mateus Fernandes of West Ham.
Following days of mounting speculation,
the dust has settled
with Tottenham Hotspur emerging as the victors in the chase for
the Portuguese star.
Tottenham will fork out £85m for Fernandes.
United expressed an interest in both midfielders but opted against proceeding after deeming their respective price tags too high.
Unsurprisingly, this has triggered concerns among a section of supporters that United’s frugality could ultimately cost them the game’s elite talent. But the 20-time English champions don’t appear to be too concerned about this, if a report by
Simon Stone of the BBC
is anything to go by.
Stone reports on where the top brass stands on recent events and the remaining weeks of the window.
“Club officials are portraying a sense of calm, stating, quite rightly, it is seven weeks before the first Premier League game at Hull and almost nine before the transfer window closes.”
“‘We are going to sign players’ – is the assurance.”
“How they play, not whether they are a big name or not, will be the judgement on which their status is measured, it is being stressed.”
Other midfielders said to be on United’s radar include Alex Scott (Bournemouth), Carlos Baleba (Brighton & Hove Albion), Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace) and Felix Nmecha (Borussia Dortmund).
