United turned to the 22-year-old after missing out on two other midfield targets, with Elliot Anderson going from
Nottingham Forest
to
Manchester City
for £116m and Tottenham buying Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85m.
United have also considered other candidates, including Aurelien Tchouameni and Adam Wharton.
