England defender

Jarell Quansah

has been handed a two-match suspension by

FIFA

following his straight red card in Sunday's dramatic

World Cup

Round of 16 victory over

Mexico

.

Quansah was dismissed in the second half after a high challenge on

defender Jesús Gallardo, forcing

England

to play the closing stages with ten men. Despite the setback, the

Three Lions

held on to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory and book their place in the quarter-finals.

FIFA's Disciplinary Committee has now confirmed that the

Bayer Leverkusen

defender will serve a two-game ban, ruling the challenge serious enough to warrant an additional match beyond the automatic suspension that accompanies a straight red card. The decision means Quansah will miss England's quarter-final clash with Norway and, should Thomas Tuchel's side progress, the semi-final as well.

The Football Association had explored the possibility of appealing the dismissal, but FIFA's ruling ends any hope of Quansah featuring again before a potential final. His absence is a significant blow for

, with Tuchel now expected to reshuffle his defence at a crucial stage of the tournament.
