Harry Kane’s match-winning double in England’s 2-1 win over DR Congo has sparked a significant move in the betting markets for World Cup top scorer, the Ballon d’Or and BBC Sports Personality of the Year. The biggest change has come in the Golden Boot betting. Kane has been slashed to 6/1 to finish as the tournament’s leading scorer, having been as big as 16/1 before the victory over DR Congo.

Kane has also strengthened his position at the head of the Ballon d’Or market, trimmed from 11/4 into 9/4 with William Hill and bet365 . And his impact has carried into the BBC Sports Personality of the Year betting too, with the England captain now the favourite at 2/1 with Ladbrokes - cut from 4/1 just 10 days ago. England’s progress came courtesy of a dramatic late turnaround. Tuchel’s side were staring at a shock exit after falling behind in the seventh minute, when Brian Cipenga beat Jordan Pickford at his near post. England looked rattled and were fortunate not to be two down when Yoanne Wissa hit the post from close range.

Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau then kept England at bay with a string of saves, while Kane was left fuming after being denied what appeared a clear penalty when he went down under contact from the keeper - a call upheld by VAR.

England dominated the second half and Tuchel turned to his bench, introducing Anthony Gordon and Bukayo Saka. Gordon proved decisive, supplying both goals: first with a cross that Kane headed home, then with a pass that Kane spun onto before drilling the winner into the roof of the net with five minutes remaining.

Spokesperson for William Hill , Lee Phelps, said: “Harry Kane’s performance against DR Congo was the kind that shifts multiple markets at once, and that’s exactly what we’ve seen overnight. The Three Lions captain was already a major player in all three markets, but scoring the two goals that kept England alive has seen him clipped from 16/1 to 6/1 for the World Cup top goalscorer, from 11/4 to 9/4 for the Ballon d’Or, and from 4/1 into 15/8 for BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

“As a result of him carrying England through a knockout tie almost single-handedly, we could see his odds fall further if the Three Lions progress past Mexico in the round of 16."
