Twelve months have passed since the football world woke up to the awful news that Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva had died in a car crash . And the heartbreaking nature of his last Instagram post prior to the accident still hits as hard today.
Jota, who was 28 at the time of his death, imprinted himself on the hearts of many Liverpool fans over the course of his five-year career at Anfield. He won the Premier League , FA Cup and League Cup with the club, as well as finishing as a runner-up in the Champions League .
He also enjoyed major success with Portugal , including two UEFA Nations League triumphs. And he was still celebrating the second of these, a penalty shootout victory over Spain , in June 2025 when he marked another massive milestone.
The forward would have almost certainly been involved in this summer's World Cup squad as his nation battle it out in North America. Roberto Martinez's men are wearing wristbands with his name on at the tournament to carry his memory with them.

Not long after Portugal's triumph in the Nations League, Jota took off on holiday with his family, where he also married his childhood sweetheart, Rute . He celebrated the occasion in early July with a post commemorating the date alongside a caption that read: "June 22, 2025. Yes to forever [Infinity emoji]."
The upload showed a behind-the-scenes account of their special day. Alongside clips of their wedding, a voice spoke over the top of the video, which said: "Dear Rute, dear Diogo. This is a day that will mark your lives for the rest of your days.
"This is the only day that you have been able to get together, at the same in the same place your family, your friends to celebrate what truly matters, which is love."

Less than 24 hours after the post was shared on Jota's account, news of his and his brother's tragic accident was already emerging. As such, that commemorative video is frozen in time as a tribute to what Jota treasured most in this world .
When fans visit Jota's official Instagram account, even today, that compilation of the couple's biggest day is the first thing that appears. And it makes for a fitting testament from a man who endeavoured to make a success in order to support his family.
Jota is survived not only by partner Rute but their three children. The couple had two sons, Dinis and Duarte, and a daughter born in November 2024.
Their sons appeared as mascots when Jota's former sides Liverpool and Wolves met in December 2025. Wife Rute was also in attendance and has repeatedly thanked Liverpool's fans for their gestures of affection to her late husband.
