Manchester City are set to appoint Enzo Maresca as their new manager after reportedly agreeing a huge financial settlement with Chelsea . Maresca is expected to take over as manager at City after Pep Guardiola brought his glittering 10-year reign to an end at the end of the season.

However, the Etihad club and Chelsea have been in negotiations over a financial settlement for Maresca. But it is now being reported by journalist Gianluca Di Marzio that an agreement has been reached that will see City pay the Stamford Bridge club €20m, which is about £17.2m.

Maresca was Guardiola’s assistant during City’s 2022/23 treble-winning campaign before he left to take over at Leicester City. He went on to lead the Foxes to promotion to the Premier League from the Sky Bet Championship.

However, after just one season at the King Power Stadium, Maresca departed to replace Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea. However, after just six months after winning the Club World Cup at the end of his first season at Stamford Bridge, the Italian left his role at the start of January.

Despite his abrupt departure from Stamford Bridge, former City defender Nedum Onuoha believes Maresca would be a solid appointment for his old club. He told PA: “I think he very much could fit the bill. This is somebody that has managed in the top flight with Chelsea and somebody that was also at City as an assistant coach.

“If Maresca was to come in I think it’d be a familiar face, somebody who understands how he wants his team to play and, listening to the way that the Chelsea players talk about Maresca, overall he could be a big positive.”

He added: “I think whoever they bring in, they’re coming in to not try to be Guardiola, they’re being brought in because of who they are.

“I think if they can add their own detail to the mix, it’s a great job for somebody to have because the club is not in a bad position – it’s the exact opposite.

“There’s lots of good young players coming through who’ve shown that they can contest for a league title and can lift silverware at Wembley.

“I don’t know who they’ll bring in but I think whoever it is will be getting one of the best jobs in world football.”
