Brazil legend Romario calls for Carlo Ancelotti to be SACKED and launches attack on 'damned' manager after shock World Cup exit: 'Tell him to go to hell and rip up his contract'

The iconic Romario has called on

Carlo Ancelotti

to 'tear up' his contract with Brazil in an impassioned rant after the country's World Cup exit.

The Selecao were knocked out at the Round of 16 stage for the first time in more than three decades when they were beaten 2-1 by Norway in New York on Sunday.

The defeat sparked emotional scenes at full-time, as

Neymar

Jr broke down in tears on the pitch after what was his final World Cup appearance in a yellow shirt.

And, a short time later,

Casemiro

struggled to contain his misery as he had to be comforted by reporters in an interview while admitting: 'We will always be the generation that didn't win the World Cup.'

Ex-AC Milan,

PSG

and

Chelsea

boss Ancelotti had been brought in to restore Brazil to their former glory some 24 years after they last lifted football's most coveted prize.

The legendary Italian has, however, faced calls to resign in the aftermath of the country's dismal World Cup campaign - with the legendary Romario the latest figure calling for his head.

The ex-Barcelona star, who lifted the World Cup in 1994, told Sky Sports Italia: 'He cannot remain Brazil's head coach. If I had been in charge of the federation, I would have walked into the dressing room, told him to go to hell and torn up his contract on the spot.

'The match against Norway was a disgrace. I'd even take him to court. Then we'll see what happens, but he cannot stay.'

Despite such criticism, Ancelotti is expected to remain the Selecao's manager until the next World Cup in Spain, Portugal and Morocco in 2030.

The country's Football Director Rodrigo Caetano said just hours after the defeat to Norway: 'He is our manager and will be throughout this cycle.

'One of the main reasons we failed in this World Cup was not to have proper, stable guidance long-term that would have prepared our national team the way it should for a World Cup and we cannot make the same mistake again.'

Ancelotti's tactical choices had been criticised by the Brazilian media throughout this summer's tournament, particularly the inclusion of Neymar in his 26-man squad.

Neymar featured eight times in the Brazilian league for Santos this season yet was included at the expense of stars such as Chelsea's Joao Pedro.

The ex-Barcelona and PSG winger played just 40 minutes of football at the tournament and, despite scoring with his final touch from the penalty spot, failed to make any substantial impact.

And, the morning after the Norway defeat, the Brazilian papers tore into Ancelotti, accusing him of 'pandering to the stars'.

One report read: 'In the final substitution, by bringing on Endrick and Neymar for the wingers, pandering to popular demand, he ruined the team,' a reporter wrote.

'It wasn't Neymar who died embracing Ancelotti, but Ancelotti who died embracing Neymar.'

Another Brazilian reporter described Brazil's World Cup campaign as the 'worst performance of Ancelotti's career with a top-level team'.

It added: 'Carlo Ancelotti made the changes that ultimately ruined Brazil, especially with the introduction of Neymar.'

While a further journalist in the same publication was scathing in her analysis of the Selecao's exploits in North America, writing: 'Brazil: 'Small, Cowardly, Dominated, Ridiculous, Shameful'.

She went on: 'Neymar's call-up is a scandal. This Brazil is not the Brazil of the people. It is the Brazil of power. An absolutely despicable and individualistic Brazil.'

The defeat marked the Brazilian's worst World Cup performance in 36 years, when they were eliminated in the Round of 16 stage at Italia '90.

Since they last lifted the trophy in 2002, the closest Brazil have come to replicating that success was in 2014 - and even that tournament ended with a humiliating 7-1 drubbing at the hands of Germany in the semi-final.

Ancelotti said after the final whistle in New Jersey: 'We must continue to work and improve and find new ideas. I believe that this loss is not the end, but the beginning of a new cycle.'

He admitted earlier: 'For me, it's a disappointing result and a great sense of sadness but it also leaves a truly valuable experience: an excellent working group. In fact, I want to thank the lads for the atmosphere they created.

'Things don't always go our way - not everything is always perfect. Today we didn't deserve to lose, but the opponent must be considered in the equation - and a rival with excellent players who made the difference.'
