Manchester United are working on strengthening several positions this summer.
United’s attempts to overhaul their midfield have suffered a major blow, with two of their top targets, Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, now heading to their Premier League rivals.
However, INEOS remain calm and are focused on other targets, with the club’s recruitment team also keen to make multiple changes in the goalkeeping department.
Manchester United have already struck an agreement with Trabzonspor to send Andre Onana on
another season-long loan
.
Signed from Inter Milan in a deal worth £47.2 million, Onana endured two frustrating seasons at United before moving to Turkey, where he made 33 appearances for the Turkish Super Lig club.
Furthermore, the Red Devils are open to parting ways with
Altay Bayindir
, who is expected to return to Turkey after struggling to provide solid competition to Senne Lammens.
In June, The Peoples Person relayed a
report
claiming United are interested in Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper
Sam Johnstone
. Now, a report suggests he has become the Mancunians’ preferred choice to replace Onana.
According to
talkSPORT
, United “continue to work on an emotional return to Old Trafford” for Johnstone, who came through the ranks at the club before leaving permanently in 2018.
The 33-year-old did not make a Premier League appearance for his boyhood club during his seven-year stint.
However, the Englishman has showcased his talents at a number of clubs in England, including Crystal Palace and Wolves. Last term, he made 12 starts for the Midlands side.
“The Red Devils are looking for a homegrown no.2 goalkeeper to replace Andre Onana,” the report states.
Furthermore, it is understood that Johnstone is keen to leave Wolves following their relegation to the Championship.
It remains unclear how much the relegated side would demand for the ex-England international, who joined them for a reported fee of £10 million. Johnstone’s existing contract runs until 2028.
